A drought across the region has made it expensive to pump water into the rice fields — and diesel prices aren't helping. Supply is down, demand is the same, and the crawfish that ARE coming out of the water are going fast.
The Atchafalaya Swamp is low on water and there are barely any crawfish. This is the time of year that farmers do what is called "seeding" — they usually take crawfish from the Atchafalaya Spillway and put them in their rice fields for next season. Because of the situation this year, they are having to use their own crawfish or buy from other farmers to seed the rice ponds. Because of the high price of diesel, some farmers can't afford the cost and are going to drain their fields — which means even less crawfish. If you want your fix before it's gone, and you don't want to cry because it's over and have to wait 6 to 8 months for your next fix — you better get them now. THE PRICE IS NOT GOING DOWN!
